Thammasat University was inaugurated on June 27, 1934. The original name of the University, as given by Professor Dr. Pridi Banomyong, was the University of Moral and Political Sciences. Professor Dr. Banomyong wished to establish a university to educate Thai people of democracy introduced to the nation for the first time two years earlier.
The philosophy of the University was marked after the speech of Professor Dr. Pridi Banomyong delivered before His Majesty the King's Regent as follow:
“..... A university is, figuratively, an oasis that quenches the thirst of those who are in pursuit of knowledge. The opportunity to acquire higher education rightly belong to every citizen under the principle of freedom of education…..”
Philosophy, Significance, and Objectives of the Program
It is the conviction of the Faculty of Nursing at Thammasat University that providing nursing education is a developmental process, one that enhances the students’ ability to become a nurse that is knowledgeable and skillful, and aware of moral and ethical issues. In order to respond to the healthcare system needs and social and economic changes, the educational system should enhance the learning environment, recognize the students’ individual differences, and provide an opportunity for students to participate in the learning process and continue to learn. The educational system should also emphasize the teaching methods employed and the extra-curricular activities provided, ensuring that they enhance the students’ critical thinking, creative problem-solving and communication skills, their sense of responsibility, justice, and self-discipline, and their ability to live in decent and safe ways. In addition, the educational system should utilize various and modern technologies in teaching.
Students that have graduated must be knowledgeable of nursing and related sciences. They should also be aware of changes in the present and those that might occur in the future, be respectful of themselves and other’s rights, considerate, have a volunteer mentality, and be responsible, kind, and able to provide holistic care, including health promotion, prevention, cure, and nursing therapeutics. Additionally, graduates should have a deep attachment to and a positive attitude toward the nursing profession, and have the desire to improve themselves and their work continuously. They should also be able to engage effectively in nursing management and be able to work as a team and with other healthcare professions efficiently.
Program Objectives
Undergraduates in the Bachelor of Nursing Science Program shall possess the following attributes:
- Knowledgeable in nursing and related fields
- Knowledgeable in nursing research, be able to apply evidence-based knowledge and research results into nursing practice
- Be capable of utilizing nursing process to provide holistic care
- Be capable of providing nursing care under professional ethics and law
- Possess leadership skills and be able to work with other healthcare professionals
- Be capable of working and living under social norm and ethics
- Have attachment and positive attitude toward the nursing profession
- Be capable of thinking critically and solving problems creativity
- Have communication skills and be able to use technology efficiently
- Be responsible for themselves and society and improve themselves continuously
Expected Learning Outcome of the Program (ELOs)
Upon completion of the program, students will be able to
1. Ethical and Moral development
1.1 Know and understand the principles of religion, morality, and ethics, professional codes of ethics, patients’ rights, professional rights, and other rights such as consumer rights, children’s rights, including laws related to health and nursing practice
1.2 Know the principles of decision-making based on ethics related to professional nursing practice.
1.3. Be able to participate in professional and social development.
1.4 Understand and be able to accept differences in values and beliefs of society.
1.5 Be able to follow social norms, rules, laws, and the principle of democracy appropriately.
2. Knowledge
2.1 Knowledgeable in essential sciences for living that benefit society and can live happily within the community, encompassing social sciences, humanities, and sciences.
2.2. Knowledgeable of health sciences and holistic care, factors related to health, policy, and healthcare services.
2.3 Knowledgeable of nursing theories and principles of nursing and midwifery to promote health, prevent illness, provide care and therapy, ensure the rational use of medication, and rehabilitate patients of all health statuses.
2.4 Knowledgeable of the nursing process including health assessment, nursing
diagnosis, nursing care, and evaluation of nursing outcomes, specific to each patient
group.
2.5 Knowledgeable of the process of knowledge seeking, knowledge exchange, and fundamental nursing research.
2.6. Knowledgeable in the principles and processes of management in healthcare services.
2.7. Knowledgeable in the principles of transcultural nursing

3.1 Ability to conceptualize, think systematically, and connect ideas effectively.
3.2 Ability to analyze the weaknesses and strengths of oneself and find ways to improve oneself continuously.
3.3 Ability to express academic reasoning and arguments based on knowledge, principles and/or evidence-based.

3.5 Ability to independently pursuing academic knowledge and accurately summarize it.

5. Analytical and communication skills
5.1 Able to communicate effectively in speaking, listening, reading, and writing
5.2 Able to read English journals or textbooks in the profession that are not complex and accurately summarize them.
5.3 Able to present information, news, and knowledge using media appropriately tailored to the type of information, the audience, and the situation.
5.4 Able to analyze and interpret quantitative data.
6. Professional Nursing Skills
6.1 Able to use the nursing process to deliver holistic nursing and midwifery care to individuals, families, and communities, with appropriate consideration for health conditions, context, and cultural differences.
6.2 Be able to perform nursing practice covering health promotion, prevention, and nursing therapeutics for patients of all ages and health conditions.
6.3 Able to perform nursing procedures, administer medication according to the treatment plan, and monitor for side effects of medications within the scope of a general nurse's responsibilities.
6.4 Able to provide advice, educate, and use strategies to promote health and prevent illness, as well as guide appropriate self-care. Also capable of giving specific information on the rational use of medication tailored to individual clients.
6.5 Respect the patient’s rights and be able to provide nursing care considering ethics, professional codes of ethics, and law, and solve problems appropriately when encountering with ethical issues in nursing practice.
6.6 Be able to help the patient to perceive and understand his or her rights, as well as the ways to protect those rights.
Academic System
The Bachelor of Nursing Science Program is a full-time program and is self-funded. The duration of each semester is described as follows:
